THE GAME Details

Who can play in THE GAME?
Participation in THE GAME is full. Guests are welcome to play when accompanied by a member of THE GAME.

What is THE GAME?
Interestingly enough . . . THE GAME is GOLF! We play the ball where it lies and any score (putt) that counts in either the team or individual game, MUST go to the bottom of the cup. It’s really pretty simple, we try to play GOLF!

What tee boxes do we play?
Members of THE GAME may play either the Green, White, White/Gold or Gold tees. You may change tee boxes each quarter. We adjust handicaps and quotas by two (2) strokes for each tee box up or back.

What games do we play?
Unlike a lot of groups that play the same game every day, we try to mix up the games and make sure everyone on the team matters. While we try to pair the groups up in different formats (A B C D, Flights, Random), the actual game is always an A B C D  combination, with a blind draw to select teams after we play.  The exception is when we have even foursomes, then the team is paired A B C D.

Where do we play?
THE GAME is made up of a group of men, who are members at The Club at The Strand. Other than summer reciprocals,  we play all of our games at The Club at The Strand. We play all three courses.

When do we play?
We play on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from October 1st to April 30th.  We also have a summer group that plays both at The Cub at The Strand and various reciprocals. Our usual tee time on Tuesday and Thursday is around 11:30am - Noon. On Saturday, we try to play a little earlier. In the summer we play around 8:00am.

Why do we play?
The most important part of THE GAME is the camaraderie among the guys - to have fun!

Golf Playing Tips

Golf Playing Tips

Swinging off plane is a very common problem, which affects some 90% of amateur golfers. Talk to any golfer who is committed to improving their swing, invariably they'll admit to working on their swing plane. Stand back and do a bit of people watching. There will surely be some serious golfers in the group. If there are, you will see them periodically let their arms hang down and they will sway from side to side. It might look funny, but they are sub-consciously working on timing and takeaway.

Putting

The goal is to find a method that is simple, swings the putter in a consistent arc and strikes the ball in the same spot on the face every time.

  • The movement of the putter is completely created by the rotation of shoulders around your neck. This movement will create a consistent arc.
  • Your hands and arms must be relaxed and quiet during the stroke. Any movement from your hands and arms will create inconsistency.
  • Your lower body and head and neck must be motionless during the stroke. Again, any movement will lead to inconsistency.

Bunker Play

Being successful out of the sand depends on three things:

  • correct setup
  • proper technique
  • consistent point of entry

You should use a sand wedge when playing short sand shots around the green. A sand wedge may vary from 55 to 58 degrees of loft with 8 to 12 degrees of bounce.

I personally prefer a 58-degree sand wedge with 8 degrees of bounce.

Approach Shots

The short game is what separates good golfers from average golfers and great golfers from good ones. Learning how to hit approach shots when you are less than 120 yards from the green can ensure a respectable 18-hole score. Mastering those shots can help you win or contend every time you play in an important match or tournament.

  • Step 1
Hit a pitch shot when you are 60 to 120 yards from the green. In order to hit a pitch, take your pitching wedge and open your shoulders just a bit as you line yourself up with the pin.
